Lessons from the Garden

1 Corinthians 3:6-7 “I planted, Apollos watered, but God was causing the growth. So then neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but God who causes the growth.”

This summer my husband, Chris, and I decided to try a small garden in our backyard. We weren’t sure what the results would be as our backyard can tend to be quite shady, but we risked it. We are so glad we did!! Our tomato plant, broccoli, and carrots are thriving!

This was my very first garden attempt and what fascinated me about the whole process is that all we did was put seeds and a little plant into the ground. It seemed unlikely that any real fruit would come out of such feeble efforts and yet one day we saw green sprouts begin to emerge from the ground and our “tomato plant” became very much like a tomato tree. In the picture you can spy the white climber that my husband Chris built to help hold up all the growth. Presently there are no less than 16 tomatoes on the plant, some will be ripe soon others just emerged.

The garden has served as a real life reminder of the spiritual truth that it doesn’t matter whether we plant or water…there is only one who causes the growth of all things in my garden and in the human soul. It is the Lord alone who saves us and grows us. Keep this biblical truth ever in the fore front of your mind and perhaps you will find yourself freed up to share Christ regardless the outcome.
