The Importance of Love in Evangelism

On the night before He died, Jesus instructed His disciples: "If you love me, you will obey what I command" (John 14:15). A few moments later He reiterated His thought: "My command is this: love each others as I have loved you" (John 14:12)

The effectiveness of relationship evangelism has been underscored in a study done for the Institute of American Church Growth. The survey asked what first attracted them to the church where they were members. Respondents reported:
Walk in's: 4-6% Programs: 2-4% Special needs: 2-4%
Pastor: 4-7% Visitation: 1-2% Sunday School: 4-6%
City wide mass crusades: .001%
Friends and/or relatives: 70-90%!!!!!!!
Relationship evangelism is not a method or an activity but rather an overflow of love for the Lord and for people. The ability to love people does not depend on gifts, experiences, emotions, or feelings. It is a choice and is best shown through caring actions and unselfish giving of ourselves to others.
"Lord, teach us to love people the way You love us."
